Migrating from Sony Ericsson to Windows Mobile 6.5
(content of this article will be modified and extended/expanded)
Once upon a time …
I have bought on eBay one Cingular 8525 (aka HTC TyTN / HTC Hermes / …). Originaly arrived with AT&T‘s WM 6.0 ROM, but soon I realized that I’m unable to pair it with my bluetooth GPS reciever. I’ve tried few WM 6.1 based ROMs and finally got my GPS working. But as I was traversing XDA-developers site (nice piece of work, respect men) I found few interesting WM 6.5 based ROMs and one finally inhabited my phone. Approximately one quarter of year I’ve been using this ROM just for experiments. But one day, I have decided to give WM a chance in daily use. So I grabbed my Sony Ericsson w580i and started attempting to migrate all my contacts, calendar, notes etc.
First step – bluetooth
Turn on bluetooth, pair devices – there it is ok. But contacts -> send all -> via bluetooth … nothing happened. As it is WM 6.5 I was unable to use DrYAR’s bluetooth as the only possible way (which I know about) how to use it is trough app’s trayicon which is hidden in my WM 6.5′s today screen.
Second step – export contacts
Turned on latest Sony Ericsson PC Suite (6.0.xxx), synced with w58oi and … how can I export contacts? I don’t know how, but after last experiences (with complete backup of phone, firmware update and after restore from complete backup I realised that backup was not really complete) I decided to use other solution. In this case My Phone Explorer from http://www.fjsoft.at/en/. After shutdown of Sony Ericsson PC Suite I was able to work with my phone and I can tell I was satisfied. Export of contacts, events, notes, SMSes, … everything went smoothly. Got vCards, iCal, CSV, XML, …
Third step – transfer to Cingular 8525
First idea – bluetooth was “moved to trash” as soon as it grown up. Second via USB using Igor V. Bozhko‘s WM5torage tool was successful. I got lot of exported files on my storage card.
Fourth step – import
After short investigation I realized, that easiest way I can choose is the way via CSV format and my favorite Dotfred’s PIMBackup tool. Inspired by article Importing Contacts To Windows Mobile Without MS Outlook I have made my shortened way.
- grab .CSV
- rename to .CSC
- tap on .CSC file (in PDA) what launches PIMBackup
- setup CSV mapping
- next – delete all contacts, import new
- FAIL!
Last record of “CSV” file was invalid. Invalid means – without end of line symbol. Patched using NotePadWM, worked well, import succeed. Except one little problem. I have mapped first name to first name, last name to last name, but nothing to name. What means I have imported a lot of contacts, which was described as “unknown”, as they have not been given “Name” field.
Fifth step – modify CSV
Modify original CSV seemed as easiest way, so oocalc contacts.csv (OpenOffice Calc), add one column with header “Name”, add function =CONCATENATE(row_for_first_name;” “;row_for_last_name), copied to all rows, exported back to CSV, renamed to CSC, transferred to PDA, PIMBackup, process mappings, next, voilaaaaa, imported, looking nice, working well.
